Return to work and sorting out tax credits!

Can anyone advise please..
My partner has just returned to work after being on JSA (income based) for over a year
We were in reciept of tax credits of £113.00 per week (we have 2 children)

On the day he started his new job I called the tax credits to update on our change of circumstances, the lady asked me for our estimated earnings for the year for this year 2013/2014 that being £20,000, she didn't ask for the previous years.

I called the tax credits helpline back yesterday as a payment that was made to us wasn't for the usual amount, so was told on the phone that our claim had been recalculated and we were now going to get £78.00 per week tax credits and that we were not intitiled to working tax credit as we made over the income threshold??

After looking online I called back as I realise now that this needs to be worked out from the previous years income, I was told on the phone that I couldn't update last years income over the phone I have to wait for my renewal pack to be sent out, can anyone tell me if this is infact the correct procedure for this?

My partner doesn't get paid from his new job until the 15th of May so at the moment the tax credits is basicly all we have to live on and even thats less than what it was before, so really need to get this sorted out asap.

Hope this all makes sense and thanks in advance.
