Is it means tested?
Are there similar rules to DLA....must have the condition for 3 months before you apply? Must be expected to have the condition for 6 months or more?
Someone has had a stroke, and they now can't walk, one leg & foot is all seized up, they can limp for short distance but get very painful, can't even get into a car passenger seat anymore.
Any advice?
I will speak to BEL just wondering what you have to say?

Currently claiming ESA, not enough money and unable to work. I cant walk long distances, had to see physio last week and even he was shocked and cant even do any movements. ESA does not seem to be enough, considering the the backlog of bills and days off work, been layed as constantly off work.
Is DLA paid more than ESA?
Any advice would appreciated of what to do?
Thanks in advance!

My son has recently claimed JSA after the death of my father for who he was claiming carers allowance. The jobcentre told him he should have also claimed IS and there is still time to claim (his carers ended 31/12/12)
Does he need to put in a claim and if so, what is the limit of time he can claim for? Should someone in jobcentre help him with this?

hi sorry if this is similar to my other posts, but my partner has decided today to go on SSP as he's got severe psoriatic arthritis, which is getting worse by the day-he's on the highest dose of Methotrexate which isn't working and he's run out of his employers sick pay
His employer has more or less decided it would be the best thing to do as he can't do his normal job anymore
Would my partner be able to just completely give his job up and apply for DLA etc etc or is that not allowed, as he feels that he'll be fobbing his employer off by saying he'll be better in 6 months time
I'm worrying that we have to live off £85 SSP a week(we've got 3 children)...what other benefits would we be able to claim whilst on SSP?

I have a very good friend with MS who lives in a two bedroom council flat that has been adapted for her needs. Electric doors, lower cupboards, special bathroom etc. She also has a carer to stay 2 nights per week. She has been told that she will have to pay extra for her second bedroom? She has asked where her carer is supposed to sleep but they said they didnt know. Her options are pay up or move to a 1 bedroom flat. My query is that if she moved what would happen if her condition deteriorated and she needed more care. Where is the carer supposed to sleep.
This seems to me that they all sing off one hymn sheet and cant take each case as unique. Any ideas on this one?

I am a woman born in 1952, I'm 60.
My DH was born 1955, he's 57.
Difference between our ages is two and a half years.
I will receive my State Pension in 2015.
DH will receive his State Pension in 2021
We will not be able to apply for Pension Credit until 2021 a waiting period of almost 7 years.
How can that be right, as a couple we will have to live on my single pension until I am 69 years old?
At least I'll have my toy boy to keep me warm. :rotfl:

I asked about a friends MIR claim some years ago (2008) and had some very helpful advice. Now they have a new question.
The mortgage is coming to an end and will be paid off by the endowment policy. The question is they will still be able to claim Council Tax benefit as they are no longer claiming MIR or any form of housing benefit. They will still be in receipt of ESA.

hi - THIS HAS BUGGED ME FOR YEARS. I DO SO APPRECIATE MY HOUSING BENEFIT SO DONT GET ME WRONG, BUT, THE BENEFIT OFFICE ACCEPTS MY STATE PENSION AS MY INCOME FOR CALCULATING THE BENFIT I AM ENTITLED TO, THEY WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT I PAY TAX ON THE AMOUNT I RECEIVE. I HAVE NO OTHER INCOME OR SAVINGS. THE OFFICE SAYS ITS BECAUSE MY PENSION IS UNEARNED INCOME, BUT I THOUGHT I'D PAID INTO IT FOR OVER 45 YEARS SO, TO ME ITS 'EARNED' INCOME. ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM?

Our nursery offers the free 15hrs education entitlement for over 3's but at a rate of £3.50p/h so a total of £166 per month yet our current fees are calculated at a much higher rate than that.
Current fees are £46 for 10.5hrs = £4.38/hr
Is this £3.50 set by the government?
Also they state "From the term after a childs 3rd birthday, our fee structure changes so that the first 15 hours per week over 38 weeks are charged at £3.50 per hour and any additional hours are charged at a higher average rate so that the total cost of the booking is as per our fee schedule above."
Doe this mean that they will charge me more for my sons extra hours to make up for any monies lost by the lower £3.50 hourly rate?

This is more of a rant than anything.
I was signed off sick from work in December, work are paying SSP and in my January wage paid £200 as they made deductions. I applied for LHA online on 28th January and went in a few days later to the council office with my evidence.
The copy I have of my tenancy agreement is not signed by the landlords agent and doesn't have the landlords name and address on it so the council won't accept it. I came home, phoned the agency and asked them to provide me with a copy of their copy of the agreement so that I could give it to the council. Instead the agency took it upon themselves to email the council my landlords details and give them an unsigned copy of the agreement!
When I called the council they would t accept that either (funnily enough) so they told me that they won't pay LHA as my claim is almost out of time and the agency haven't confirmed that I am liable to pay rent.
When I called the agency and told them not to expect any rent until they got the correct documents to the council they said they don't have a signed copy of our lease!
What am I supposed to do here? We definitely signed a copy, I'm wheelchair bound and their office is beyond hard to get to and I need this done but they are sitting on their bottoms doing nothing about it. Meanwhile the council is happy that they don't need to provide £80/week that their calculator thinks I should be entitled to.

Hi All,
I'm hoping someone is able to help...
Soon I will be living with my long-term girlfriend and we are expecting a baby at the end of April. She will be a stay at home Mum and is not entitled to maternity pay, so she was told anyway after applying.
Anyway that was just a bit of background, my question is since I will be the only person living in the house with an income will we get a 25% discount on the council tax that we pay?
Also, if anyone knows of anything we will be able to claim from the government please let me know. I have never claimed anything from the state before so it's all a bit new and they don't make it easy for you to find out what you're entitled to.
Thanks! :)

My wife got a A2 form to fill out about a week ago and had to be back there by 18th Feb.
we sent it and they got it back on the 18th but today we got a letter from Chelmsford lntegrity centre saying that they can not pay us from feb 12th as failed to reply to requests for information.
we sent it recorded and its saying on royal mails website that they got it on the 18th.
so i called them and told them this and gave them the tracking number and as we get paid next tuesday i asked if we will still get it on that date but he said he could not say if we will or not as the money wont have been sent yet.
he said there was a note from yesterday that he could see saying they got it.
so what do we do now?
they must be able to tell if payment have restarted again?
this letter was sent on the day that they wanted the form back.

First of all does UC come in in April or October?
Second, is the benefit cap £500 a week for couples with no kids? If so that's £2000 a month roughly! That seems an awful lot.

Hi,
I've been I'll and on long term sick leave for years. I have fibromyalgia, CFS, Raynaud's & a host of other illnesses. My employer doesn't expect me to go back to work & neither do I.
I used to be on incapacity benefit & still get DLA and industrial injuries benefit. Yesterday I received a letter telling me my ESA (is that what it's called now?) is up as I've had the maximum 1 year that I can have.
When did this come into effect? I remember having an interview @ the job centre plus last year. The guy looked at me and said he didn't think I would be able to work. He said that "at some point in the future, you may be required to go for an interview or something". They never have, I've had no contact from them whatsoever till this letter.
I breathed a sigh of relief and haven't thought any more about it. Today when I telephoned the number on the letter, she told me that I can't appeal as that's the law & I've had the maximum I can get. Hubby is out of work after being a student, so he's not entitled to contribution based job seekers. I'm absolutely flummoxed.
Can anyone advise me what happens from here? I'm absolutely desperate.

Hi all im new to the forum and have come here to find some help. my partner and i have been together a year now and would like to move in together. i work and take home no more than 1200 a month while she receives housing, income support and child benefit. if we were to move in together what benefits would she lose? and what would i have to be liable for? she plans on going back to work as soon as the lil one can go to school. she is a single mom too. I have a lot of outgoings so i dont exactly have a lot of money spare, any suggestions? i dont want to do something that will leave her out of pocket and affect her daughters life in any way but we also really want to live together.

on the 20th of Feb' i got a letter [dated 14th] saying my ESA [SG] is going up...only a tiny bit, but it all helps.
on the 1st page it says...
we will pay you this amount from your first payday after the 8th of April.
...which for me would be the 10th of April.
on the 2nd page it says...
this amount will apply from 11th April.
i'm confused!

Hi,
There are about 3 long running threads on this topic at the moment, is it possible to have a sticky or something with the important details on it so these posts don't get hijacked by the same arguments over and over. Just a thought.
Dictionary definition of tax
"A compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers' income and business profits or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions"
My understanding is that this change comes under the welfare reform act in order to decrease the spend on benefits. Similar changes were applied to private lets and social housing are now being brought into line. Ideally there would be enough social housing of the correct size for the people that want it but that's not going to happen. There are areas of social housing that people don't want to live, surely some effort should be put into these areas.
I did read in one the many posts about the entitled society can't remember which one but I remember thinking that it made a lot of sense. I had 3 jobs whilst at university, saved hard all my life and gone without things so I could have the house I want in the area i want. To start with i had to live in a 1 bed flat in a tennement in a not so great area it was tiny and I really wasn't that happy with it but I worked hard spent money doing it and was able to make enough money to buy better the next time round.
I know every ones situatiuon is different, but as many people have also posted we in this country have a very generous benefit system but the pot isn't bottomless ....

My fianc! and I have just separated and I am making a claim for Tax Credits.
I have tried both the Entitled To and the Benefits Advisor but they are coming up with different figures.
I work full time earning £15,000. I already claim Child Benefit. My 15 year old son gets DLA (MRC & LRM). I only started work in May 2012 and in the previous tax year my fianc! supported me financially.
According to Entitled To I should receive £89.53 for Working tax credit and £118.72 for Child Tax Credit.
According to Benefits Advisor I should receive £0 for Working Tax Credit and £112.55 for Child Tax Credit and £28.53 for LHA.
Which would be more accurate? I know I will find out for certain once I claim but have been told the form could take 2 weeks to arrive then 6 weeks for the claim to go through.
I imagine it will all change anyway when the Universal Credit comes along!
