Help required from Benefit advisers re permitted work

• I am looking for some advice for a family member. She and her husband have a business which he has not been able to do much with due to him looking after her. After a long time with no income except WTC and CTC coming in they have finally been accepted for Income based ESA. Now the fun will start for PIP!

As occasionally I would watch her and the children to allow him to go on the odd days work she asked the adviser how this would work. She was advised no work allowed at all. I then read about permitted work which says:

"Usually your ESA isn’t affected if you:

• work and earn up to £20 a week
• work and earn up to £99.50 a week doing work supervised by someone from a local council or voluntary organisation
• work less than 16 hours a week, earn up to £99.50 a week for up to 52 weeks"

I asked her to ask about this as she wants to try and keep the business going ( in such a limited way ) if possible and was told again that they could not earn anything and that the adviser thought there was no help for the self employed.Who is correct here? Any help will be appreciated.
