Just wondering if anyone could advise. Around 3 years ago I had a letter from HMRC saying they've overpaid £560 tax credits and I needed to repay. I asked for a breakdown of how they arrived at this and they sent me a calculation. Now it's a while ago I cannot remember on what grounds, but at the time I was 100% certain they had made an error with this and I showed this to a number of people at the time who agreed with me, so I replied with my own calculations and an explanation of why I thought their workings were inaccurate. They never responded to this letter and so I made the assumption eventually that they'd seen that I was correct and had not bothered to let me know.
Forward wind to today: I've just received a letter saying their records show them I owe them a debt of £560, and that I need to repay. Now that so much time has passed, I cannot remember on what grounds that I felt their calculations were incorrect and my circumstances have changed significantly since then so I'm not sure I'd be able to work it out again now. (My own fault for being disorganised, I know). I no longer have record of the letters I sent them because I have a different computer.
I'm feeling pretty cheated because I am certain, absolutely certain that their calculations were wrong but at this stage without being able to recall why I guess I have no option but to pay the "debt". I just wanted to ask if anybody knows of any way I can fight this without that knowledge - if them having left it so long without replying to my letter etc. has changed anything legally? Or am I at a brick wall?
