Hi,
I've been trying to sort out my taxes for ages and it's all so confusing! If someone could help me that would be great :)
The situation:
I am a full-time student but work weekends and evenings, and holidays for a little pocket money. Before starting uni, I was in full-time employment and handed in my P45 from that to my current employer.
Since starting my employment in February 2012 I've been on the tax code OT WK1 and paying out income tax, EES NI and advance (?). As a full-time student, earning less than £8,105 a year I don't think I should be paying income tax. However the form to fill out on student employment (P38) states that this is if the student works "solely during holidays" but I do weekends and evenings too...
I was told by the office to complete a new P46, after months of chasing they said I had incorrectly filled in the original P46 (I didn't even send one, sent a P45!), but I am also confused on this: there is a section on student loans which says tick the box if you have left higher education and have not fully repaid your student loan. Do not tick the box if you are repaying your student loan through monthly payments- neither of which is me, I haven't left or paid any yet!
And finally. R&C site directed me to a P50 when looking to claim money back that I overpaid through work. However this looks like it's only for after you've left that employment. It also says to send it off with the P45 which I don't have. Another route on the website told me that I need to send an amended tax return- but then it says only use a tax return if you have your own business, etc. and categories that I do not apply to.
Also! New payslip came through with the tax code simply "OT", don't know the difference or why it has changed... but something ain't right...
Thank you very much for reading, and any help would be appreciated. I will be calling the tax office tomorrow anyway (they are shut today) and hopefully getting my money back! I have called them before and they said my employer has not registered me, then I spoke to my employer who said it was my fault etc.
Growing up is hard...
