Contributory JSA

Hi
Just joined the site and have been reading and learning a lot from this forum.

I could do with some advice on my DH situation. He worked full-time for approximately 20 years and then three years ago took a part-time post which was a promotion and took him squarely into the area he was interested in with the hope of full-time work at a later stage. He worked part-time (24 hours per week) for the past three years up until last September on a fixed term contract. He was promised an extension from then but the HE cuts kicked in and only 1 day per week (8 hours) materialised. So has been managing on around £525 per month since September.

It seems likely that this will end in July 2013 and he will be unemployed with no real prospect of another job in the HE field which is a shame after all his years of studying. Could anyone advise on whether he would be eligible for contributory JSA and also advise whether even if he is not if he should "sign on" regularly anyway for the NI contribution part of it. Thanks in advance.
