My father is 82 and my mother is 75 and they both live in their own home. My father suffers with a variety of health issues: vascular Parkinsonism, poor balance, poor bladder control to name but three.
My mother provides the roll of carer and does a fantastic job too. Whilst she knows she could call on nurses to wash my father, get him ready for bed, etc. she is old school and believes this is her role in life.
She has applied for the carers allowance (with my assistance) but she has been turned down. According to the letter from the DWP, the reason given was The amount of State Pension you get is more than the amount of Carers Allowance we could pay you.
Is this correct? I would have thought that there are many elderly couples in this situation; Im sure Ive heard of other people with these circumstances getting the allowance.
Thanks
