Benefits after redundancy - does 'dig money' count?

Presently this is all still at the hypothetical stage, OH is still working at the moment but I'd like to try to educate myself about certain things should our position change.

IF OH's redundancy payment was between £6K and £16K, I understand x amount would be deducted from a possible benefit claim as our cash would be over £6K. That's about all I know.

I'm a carer for adult son who still lives with us. He is in support group for ESA and also gets DLA. I get carer's allowance.

An amount of money is taken from these benefits for his 'keep' each week. Dig money if you like.

Does this dig money count when claiming JS allowance?

I assume OH would just claim the basic £71 per week since there was redundancy money to live off?

OH was hoping to get another job really quickly and therefore not claim any kind of benefit at all, but given the level of unemployment where we will be living, I'm not as confident as he is and would like to at least consider what would happen if he's unable to find work as quickly as he would like.

We haven't had anything to do with unemployment benefits before so please don't assume I'll understand acronyms or short references to things, You may need to spell it out. :o

Thanks for any advice.
