Query on possible over or under payment?!

Hi all

I was hoping someone may be able to help me with a tax credits query...

Last year, I claimed for a few months when I was left as a single parent. We reconciled, so I stopped my claim immediately. I received a letter saying I had been overpaid by £200 and that I would not hear until after April 2013 what would be done... roll forward to yesterday and I received a letter stating I have still been overpaid by £200 BUT if my income was below 18k or above 28k for the tax year 12/13 I was to ring them and give them my updated info.

As I was still on maternity leave in 2012 and I only returned to work part-time - my income is well below the 18k... it was 13k, minus a bit more for maternity leave. So I've given him the updated figures and he's said I will hear more within 6 weeks time. He said he didn't know, and therefore couldn't tell me, anything about any over-payments OR any under-payments...?

So I am wondering whether or not its likely I will still need to pay back this £200??? Obviously it would be amazing if they ended up owing ME money LOL! But I am way more concerned about whether I will owe them £200 and how they will want it paid back - i.e. immediately? or will they take it out of my salary?

I am just curious as my salary was a lot LESS than their "payments" were based on, whether that means I was actually entitled to more during the period I claimed and therefore this would cancel out my over-payment?

I'd be grateful for any thoughts - I've waited so long to find out and now have another 6 weeks! LOL

Thank you in advance,
L xxx
