Hi Everyone,
I have received the renewal pack for Tax credits and I find myself again with this dilema. Do we qualify for working tax credits?
We did not last year...
Let me explain. My husband had a stroke in October 2011 and has not been able to work. However before the stroke he was a House Husband.
When we went to renew our claim, we were told we did not qualify for Working Tax Credits as he was not working and he did not receive what used to be incapacity benefit. He did not receive it because he had not paid enough NI contributions as he was a house husband and we were misinformed as we though with him receiving child benefit on his name all that would be covered. As I said we were misinformed. But that is another story.
The thing is that I have looked again at what counts as work for Working Tax Credits and it clearly says :
If you're responsible for children you need to be aged at least 16, and work the following hours to get Working Tax Credit:
if you're in a couple, your joint paid working hours need to be at least 24 a week, with one of you working at least 16 hours a week
So if you're a couple and only one of you is working, that person will need to work at least 24 hours a week
It also says that if we jointly work less than 24 hours a week we can still qualify if one of us works at least 16 hour and the other one is incapacitated (he is claiming disability living allowance)
However regardless of his incapacity...it does not apply to us as we should already qualify because I work 35 hours a week!?
So if this is correct last year we missed out on the Working Tax Credits element?
Please someone help?
