Hello money saving experts! I've recently encountered an unusual situation, regarding benefits, about which I'd appreciate some advice. I've noticed several DWP decision makers posting here, and more experienced claimants, so I thought this was a good place to find it.
Several years ago now I was diagnosed with agoraphobia and panic disorder. I applied for and, after six months of fighting, received, minimal benefits. A few years later this claim expired, and attempts to renew it failed, even after several visits from the DWP's own assessment teams supporting my claim.
So since then I've been supported by family members and friends who are probably too fond of me, until very recently a very good friend of mine died, leaving me around 15,000 pounds.
I used the bulk of the money to help my sister pay off her vast credit card bills so that she and her family could buy a place in less than 30 years, however she is paying me back monthly..
Then out of nowhere I get a letter, years too late, that a decision has 'been actioned', and I will be receiving benefits.
Now currently my friend's bequeathment falls under the limits, but it will slowly be coming back in.
My question is: Am I required to cancel benefits in light of that, and use my friend's money until I have little enough to start the five year battle again?
That seems somehow cross purposes.. and it would make more sense to tell my sister to put the money into a new house and see her family right even earlier.
Thanks for reading through all that. Any advice or experience much appreciated.
