Hi
I work for a chinese takeaway and last year the takeaway was sold on to a new owner, all the same staff were kept and so everything pretty much continued as normal until around 6 months later I received a letter from the Inland revenue asking for pay slips going back to the new tax year April 2012.
After speaking to my new manager I found out they had taken me off the books leaving a gap of between 5-6 months where no tax was being paid totalling to £400.
I was told that it was my fault for not informing them of my wish to stay on the books and that I would have to pay out of my own pocket which at the time I saw no other option except to take it on the chin.
Is it no one elses fault but my own for not informing them of my wish to stay on the books or does the fault lie with them as employers, or is their accountant responsible in some way? I think it is also important to note that they kept the same accountant.
It has been a little while since this all came to light but I am finding that its still on my mind especially as it may have not been my fault and that I might be paying something back which not all my responsibilty.
I would appreciate any advice on this matter as I dont have very little knowledge in this area.
Thank you
