Anyone come across the following?
Our household (mom, dad and 3 kids) told HMRC that we have an exclusively PAYE generated income over the £60k threshold pre-Jan '13 so as to cancel child benefit payments.
Letter from HMRC to that effect in Jan '13 so all fine - Phew! no risk of having to needlessly register for self-assessment then. :T
Or so we thought....
Just happened to check the account into which CB used to be paid into and noticed that whilst 2/3rds of the CB has stopped, for some reason the balancing 1/3rd seems to have continued.
Ok - fine. Let's call the HMRC, find out what's going on and repay that third. Simples!
No, it ins't... :(
Have been told that in spite of (a) it being CB Office's error in having continued to pay the 1/3rd; and (b) my immediate acceptance to repay this as soon as I noticed it, HMRC will now insist that I self-assess for 12/13 AND (because it's now April and we've only just spotted their error) 13/14.
Wow. That's tones of paperwork and admin (for HMRC and me) for the grand sum of £214.40 they have paid by mistake which I am more than happy to give back straight away.
Am I going mad or is there a sensible way to do this? I'd be amazed if we're the only family affected as any family with more than one child, let alone three + are bound to be in a similar spot unless they got someone in the Child Benefit office to look at their cancellation request whilst awake rather than dozing off which seems to have happened to us.
Any thoughts very much appreciated!!
So far, thoughts amount to a witty letter to the Telegraph or Private Eye asking how much it costs in tax to have someone review a self-assessment form for someone exclusively on PAYE but for £214.40 in mis-applied CB.
Difficult to distill the humour so far though sadly....
Thanks
