Making sense of Tax credit

Hoping someone can help with a query before I call tax credits.

I called then last March and informed them of my earnings for 2011-2012. My wages were high enough that I was not entitled to any help.
However I knew this year 2012-2013 I would be earning about £14000 less due to me being on maternity leave. I called them and told them of this and they sent me my entitlement.
I got out the paperwork today to inform them that this year 2013-2014 my wages were high again and I need to cancel the tax credits but I notice that they my earnings for 2011-2012 as only £11000. This is incorrect and I am going to inform them. Its actually £30000 short!
I've used the online calculator to find what I should have been given last year as I suspect I've been overpaid.

However,(bear with me) From the calculator I am entitled to a LOT less.

My question is:
They think I've had a £16000 increase in wages between 2011/2012-2012/2013 and have entitled me to £5000 for the year.
Ive actually had a decrease of £14000 in wages and this (according to the online calculator) entitles me to only £1000 for the year.

Is this correct? Surely a decrease in wages should mean you get more help rather than less. Or is it a scenario that the online calculator cant deal with.
Many Many thanks for your help.
