My parents are living in a 3 bedroom council property. They have been there for 23 years. We (4 children) have all flown the nest.
They have received a standard letter (that went to all homes on that estate) from the council about the new bedroom tax.
Both of my parents are in their very early 60's (not quite retirement age). My mother works part time and my father works full time (self employed milk man and his wages are dropping every month). They are really worried about the new tax and how it will effect them with my fathers wages getting lower every month.
They do not claim any benefits and pay their rent on time every month. What is worrying my mother in particular is that my parents no longer share a bedroom. My father (being a milkman) works odd hours so gets up at 3am every morning. My mother has a sleep condition and is on medication to help her sleep so they don't want to go down to one bedroom.
I believe that the charges are £12 per week per extra bedroom.
To help my parents me and my brother and sisters (4 children) have offered to pay £24 every 4 weeks each so that they can stay in their home.
Can someone explain the bedroom tax to me. Are those affected just those who claim benefits and live in council accommodation or anyone living in council accommodation whether they are claiming benefits or not?
Advice appreciated.
