Not sure this is the right place, but hopefully someone can advise
Prior to us getting together, my now wife went through a period where she was in receipt of Housing benefit. Last year, the council contacted her to say that due to an error they made in their calculations, there was an over payment of HB to her, and could she pay it back? Fair enough, I advised her to ask for details of how the overpayment was constructed, and request copies of invoices or applicable documentation that supported the overpayment, in the meantime I said that we should pay a nominal sum in respect of the amount until we could confirm the amount with the supporting documents.
So, thats been happening, on the assumption that the amounts they say are due actually are, only the council are unable to provide any proof of the sum in question, and now refuse to. As it stands we have been paying over money for something there is no evidence of, and now I am a bit concerned is possibly another error on their behalf. Should my wife expect some sort of proof of this 'debt'?
