Tax Credits??

Hello,

Call me lazy, I havent done any research into this so I may be asking stupid questions here but I wondered how it worked for employed and self employed people.

When I done a calculator on here, it said my partner may be able to get £44 a week in Tax Credits. This seems a lot when you already have a job.

Were not very keen in claiming however I will soon need to employ a member of staff but I am worried the low wage will put them off. I have someone in mind who is currently out of work and receiving housing benefit but nothing else. If I employ them for 37.5 hours per week at minimum wage, would they be able to get tax credits to bump up their earnings and what is the average amount you can get.

As for us, I would claim them as I receive little profit for myself but am not old enough and my partner gets company material payments going through his account and whilst housing benefit have said its "OK" as it just effects our entitlement a little, I don't want to confuse things by claiming tax credits and then owing them because my partners account is too high and yes, I have told him to stop accepting material payments through his account and he will but he doesn't listen. Its a family company he is employed by and the brother currently has access to the business account and keeps helping himself to money and so my partner has essentially been "hiding" some payments from the business account until they get the brother off as recently he paid his mortgage with a large material payment!

Thanks guys :D
