I was planning to apply for working tax credits, and I've been reading that the tax credits are based on the previous years earnings, so April 2011 - March 2012. My circumstances were completely different then and I earned more than single working threshold (15k) but that job ended 11 months ago, and I will be starting a new job soon below the threshold (12k a year). Can I get HMRC to look at my income (I will be working more than 30 hours) and base the award from now until April on earnings from April 2012 to the present?
The tax credit would be a big help. I could wait until April for them to calculate for this year, but I would lose 2 months (with backdating) which would be a massive help.
I've been trying to understand the whole thing and it's rather confusing, and some snippets of info have suggested HMRC will look at current income not the previous year if prodded but I've seen nothing definitive on that.
Cheers
