I am 37, married with 3 children, and decided to go to University last September to train to be an adult Nurse. At the time of enrolment we were on Full council tax benefit and paid minimal rent. I knew that once I was allocated my NHS bursary my rent and council tax would rise. The housing have now put us on full rent and full council tax, and when we asked why they said they have also taken into account my student loan off the government. We did tell them from the start and was open and honest about what we were doing. I was not aware that they could take your student loan into account, as this is like a bank loan? Am I right? The council reckons because I will never be a high wage earner, I will be exempt from paying back my loan, and this is their excuse for taking it into account as earnings? Am I being screwed over? And how do they know I will never make it into the top pay brackets, is this discrimination?
